The Great Meteoron Monastery was founded by Athanasios the Meteorite in 1340 and later expanded by his successor, John Uros. It is perched on a sandstone pillar over 600 meters above sea level. Access to the monastery is via a series of steps carved into the rock, and it features notable frescoes and an impressive refectory. Visitors can explore the complex, which includes a church, museum, and various outbuildings, offering a glimpse into monastic life.
